SEAN HALEY THACKREY (b. Los Angeles California, July 9, 1942—d. Bolinas, California, May 31, 2022) was a Northern California winemaker based in the town of Bolinas (Marin County). An autodidactic polymath who, in between collecting antiquarian books and learning five languages, developed a following as one of California’s most renowned artisan winemakers, died May 31, 2022. He was 79.
Prior to winemaking, Thackrey co-directed Thackrey & Robertson Gallery (in partnership with Sally Robertson and Susan Thackrey). From 1970—1995, the Gallery at 2266 Union Street, San Francisco, California specialized in 19th and 20th–century prints, drawings, and photographs with an international clientele. Photography, at the time, was just beginning to be taken seriously as a field by museums and collectors. Thackrey & Robertson established the Rubel Collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art the basis for which the Met was to initiate, under the stewardship of Maria Morris Hamburg, its Photography Department. Other clients of the gallery would also leave their collections to major institutions such as The DeYoung Fine Arts Museum and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
Less known is that Sean himself was a photographer.
